How I Got My Kids Names

Has someone ever ask you “How did you get your kids name?” or “Where did their name come from?” I’ve had people ask these questions a few times. Brooklyn and Emileigh (pronounced Emily) are my girls names. Where I live you don’t hear the name Brooklyn  very often and you don’t see the name Emileigh spelled like this.

Brooklyn is named after the New York City borough.  I was going to name her something else, but my sister did not like the name I had chosen. I heard the name Brooklyn a couple of times and really like the way it sounded. My sister really like the name when I mentioned it to her. In 2006, I visited New York City for the first time and I fell in love with the city. I am glad I was able to name her after a place I love. Now whenever she sees the Brooklyn Bridge she calls it her bridge.

With Emileigh my husband and I had a hard time picking a name for her. We wanted a name that would go well with Brooklyn’s name. When we finally agreed on Emileigh’s name I wanted to spell it Emilie. My husband wanted it spelled Emileigh because he wanted to name her after me. He liked the idea of having my name in her name since my middle name is Leigh. I agreed to spell it this way because I loved the thought behind it. I love that Emileigh’s name is spelled differently.

I love this post and the meanings behind the girls’ names. I hope they will be as thoughtful with their own kids’ names.
